Overview

lingobrief helps language learners simplify German and Spanish news, translate selected phrases, save vocabulary locally, and export saved vocabulary. This policy explains what information is processed when you use the Chrome extension and website.

Information the extension processes

When you use the extension to simplify an article, the extension sends the article title, page URL, selected CEFR level, learning language, anonymous device ID, and extracted article text to the lingobrief API. When you translate or save selected text, the extension sends the selected text, nearby sentence context, learning language, anonymous device ID, and page information to the API.

The extension stores settings, saved vocabulary, source page information, and the anonymous device ID in Chrome local extension storage on your device. You can delete saved vocabulary from the extension's Vocabulary page or remove the extension to clear its local storage.

Backend processing

The lingobrief API uses the submitted text to generate simplifications and translations. The API stores anonymous usage counts, including the device ID, monthly simplification usage, daily AI request counts, and network-level rate-limit information. This is used to provide the free monthly allowance and protect the service from abuse.

Service providers

lingobrief uses OpenAI to generate article simplifications and translations, Railway to host the API, Netlify to host the website and waitlist form, and Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand website traffic. These providers process information as needed to provide their services.

Waitlist emails

If you submit the website waitlist form, your email address is used to contact you about expanded access and product updates. Submitting the waitlist form is optional.

What we do not do

lingobrief does not sell user data, does not use article text or saved vocabulary for advertising, and does not request access to browser history, tabs beyond the active page action, Gmail, Google Drive, or social accounts.

We may update this policy as the product changes. Material updates will be reflected by changing the date at the top of this page.
